The Purple Elk Triplets

Yes, friends, it was only a matter of time. In all honesty I should have seen this coming – ‘this’ being the Christmas Jumper. Is it just me or have you noticed a lot more festive knitwear around this year? – on humans too, I hasten to add. It all started when my pals Jac and Bertie ordered this Purple Elk jumper designed by a company called Wolters from my favourite shop in Edinburgh, Just Dogs. They posted photos on Twitter. They looked great. Bertie and Jac were festive jumper twins. “Come on, Harris, join us,” Bertie said. “We can be wiry jumper triplets.”

Or, to give us our full name as coined by Jac, The Purple Elk Triplets. Now there’s a name to wear with pride. We sound like a folk group. Sometimes I have to work hard to talk my Mum into things, but not this time. “You’re creating a folk group?” she asked. “With your pals Jac and Bertie?” It’s funny how some ideas just… develop… particularly when you want your Mum to buy you something. “Yes,” I said, “and Jac has named us The Purple Elk Triplets, so, I need to pop to Just Dogs and pick up my purple threads.”

And so it happened. Here’s an overhead view of the elk…

Festive, huh? And more to the point, think about how all three of us are going to look on the album cover. (I realise that Jac, Bertie and I come from the download generation, but The Purple Elk Triplets has a retro ring to it, so we’re definitely going vinyl.) There are a few issues in making this happen as we all live in different parts of the UK, but surely between Skype and FaceTime we can pull – or howl – something together. Unfortunately, none of us are musicians, not that I know of anyway, and every folk group needs, well, a band. So I asked the Parents whether they could help. Surely, between them, I thought, there must be some musical talent just waiting to be unearthed and put to good use…

“I played the organ as a child,” Mum said, sounding slightly sheepish. “The organ?” I asked. “Yes,” she said. “Not exactly helpful for a folk group, I know.” I turned to Dad. “I played the flute, son,” he said. (I should point out, my Dad grew up in Northern Ireland, which is the home of James Galway, otherwise known as The Man with the Golden Flute, so at least Dad had a good reason for his choice.) So there we have it – an organ and a flute. That’s what our band consists of so far. Friends, send musical help. Fast.

In the meantime, Jac, Bertie and myself will be staying cosy in our festive sweaters, and howling working on harmonies for our first album…

Sorry, did someone say Christmas album…?

    • Auntie, this question re professionalism is a good one. *raises eyebrows* Dad was apparently in his school band so he was pretty good, while Mum has never played in public. “I used to play Edelweiss,” she says, getting a bit misty-eyed. Have you ever seen the film About a Boy, Auntie? Apparently Mum was ‘that’ kid. I sense we will need catering for sure, and PR for the European tour! *punches air with paw* X X

  3. Very dapper, Harris! I am tempted to get one for Archie too but he is going to be very spoilt on Christmas Day so I better hold off for a bit! 😉

    • Technically, it’s part of my Christmas too, but as it’s now Christmas week I got to have this one early. My Mum’s just told me that my ‘main Christmas present’ is going to be a little late as she was getting me a new bed, but when she went to the shop today to measure it, well, it was huge, “big enough for three dachshunds to stretch out in,” she said, while the smaller size was way too small. So she’s ordering one online. I don’t mind… it just means that I’m going to have a Christmas pressie this week and another one… some time soon! *air-paw punch* Really hope Archie enjoys Christmas day. I’m getting quite excited about possibly meeting him soon… *massive paw clap!*
